Retaining Walls

Questions about retaining wall types, costs, and construction.

Retaining wall costs typically range from $15,000 to $245,000 depending on height, length, materials, and site conditions. A standard 3-foot engineered block wall averages $50-$75 per square face foot installed. Projects involving steep slopes, lakefront access, or engineered foundations cost more due to equipment and permitting requirements. We provide detailed, itemized quotes after an on-site evaluation. Learn more about our retaining wall services.

We build engineered block retaining walls (including smooth-faced and textured options from County Materials and Belgard), natural boulder walls, fieldstone walls, and multi-tier wall systems. We select materials based on your property's specific conditions, aesthetic preferences, and budget. All walls are built with proper drainage, base preparation, and reinforcement designed for Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles. Learn about our boulder wall options.

A properly built retaining wall should last 50+ years in Minnesota when constructed with the right materials, adequate drainage, and a proper engineered foundation. The most common reasons walls fail prematurely are poor drainage behind the wall, insufficient base preparation, and materials not rated for freeze-thaw exposure. We address all of these factors in every build.

Paver Patios

Questions about patio design, installation, and materials.

Most paver patio installations take 3-7 days depending on size and complexity. A standard 400-square-foot patio typically takes 3-4 days. Larger projects (800-1,200+ sq ft) with multiple patterns, integrated retaining walls, or drainage systems may take 5-7 days. We start with proper excavation, grading, and base preparation — which accounts for about 60% of the project timeline. Learn more about our patio installation process.

We primarily work with County Materials and Belgard, both of which manufacture pavers specifically rated for Minnesota's climate. We also install natural stone options including flagstone patios and walkways. The choice of material depends on your design preferences, budget, and how the space will be used. We guide you through material selection during the design phase.

Yes. Sloped yards are one of our specialties. We handle the grading, build retaining walls where needed to create level areas, and ensure proper drainage away from your home. Many of our projects in the Lake Minnetonka area involve significant grade changes that require engineered solutions. See examples of our work on sloped properties.

Shoreline & Erosion Control

Questions about lakefront restoration and permitting.

Yes. Shoreline restoration on Lake Minnetonka requires permits from both the local city and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD). We manage the entire permitting process — from application to approval — so you do not have to navigate the requirements yourself. Most permits take 4-8 weeks for approval. Our experience with local regulations means fewer revisions and faster approvals. Learn more about our shoreline services.

Common signs include: visible erosion or soil loss along the water's edge, exposed tree roots near the shoreline, leaning or fallen trees along the bank, chunks of bank falling into the water after storms, standing water or drainage problems near the shore, and old rip rap or retaining walls that have shifted or collapsed. If you notice any of these on your Lake Minnetonka or Prior Lake property, a free evaluation can determine the scope of work needed.

Rip rap is a layer of large fieldstone boulders placed along a shoreline to absorb wave energy, prevent erosion, and stabilize the bank. When properly sized, shaped, and placed with adequate base preparation, rip rap can last 30-50+ years on Lake Minnetonka. The key is selecting boulders heavy enough to resist ice heaving and water movement — typically 2-4 foot diameter stones for lake shorelines. See our Orono rip rap rebuild project.

Design Process

Questions about 3D renderings, design fees, and project planning.

A 3D rendering is a photorealistic digital model of your property showing exactly what your finished landscape project will look like. We use high-definition 3D modeling software to create detailed visualizations of patios, walls, plantings, lighting, and outdoor living areas. This lets you see materials, colors, and proportions before construction begins. Design revisions are included — we refine the plan until it matches your vision. Learn more about our design services.

We charge a design fee for 3D landscape design services. If you hire us for the installation, the design fee is applied directly to your project cost — so you effectively get the design for free. If you choose not to proceed with installation, you keep the design plans and can use them with another contractor. This approach ensures every project starts with a clear, detailed plan rather than guesswork.

Pricing & Timeline

Questions about project costs, scheduling, and what to expect.

We recommend contacting us 4-8 weeks before you want construction to begin. The design phase typically takes 1-2 weeks, and permitting (when required) can take 4-8 weeks. Spring and early summer are our busiest seasons, so booking early ensures you get on the schedule. That said, we often have availability for smaller projects on shorter timelines — it never hurts to call.

Yes. We typically require a deposit to secure your project on our schedule and order materials. The deposit amount and payment schedule are clearly outlined in your project contract before any work begins. We never ask for full payment upfront. Progress payments are tied to project milestones.

Minnesota weather is part of every project plan. We monitor forecasts closely and schedule around rain, extreme cold, and snow. If weather causes a delay, we communicate with you immediately and reschedule at the earliest safe opportunity. We never work in conditions that would compromise the quality of the installation — proper base preparation and material curing require dry conditions.

Maintenance

Questions about caring for your completed project.

Paver patios are relatively low maintenance. We recommend sweeping debris regularly, pulling weeds from joints as they appear, and re-applying polymeric sand every 3-5 years to keep joints sealed. Avoid using de-icing chemicals on pavers during winter — sand is a better alternative. If a paver becomes damaged or stained, individual pavers can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding surface.

New plantings need consistent watering for the first growing season — typically deep watering 2-3 times per week depending on weather and soil conditions. We provide specific care instructions for every planting installation, including watering schedules, fertilization timing, and mulch recommendations. We also offer ongoing property maintenance services if you prefer professional care.
